Trust Wallet Shows Zero Balance After Restoring Wallet on a New Phone
When you restore a Trust Wallet on a new phone and see a zero balance, the wallet is almost certainly not empty. The most common cause is that the recovery phrase was entered incorrectly, you are on the wrong blockchain network, or the wallet has not finished syncing the token balances. In nearly all cases, the funds are still on the blockchain and can be made visible again by following a few troubleshooting steps.
Why restoring a wallet can show zero
Trust Wallet is a non-custodial wallet. It does not hold your funds; it only displays what is recorded on the blockchain. When you restore a wallet using your recovery phrase, the app rebuilds a set of private keys and then queries the blockchain for your balances. If the app cannot match the correct derivation path, network, or token list, it shows a zero balance.
The three main reasons are:
- A mistyped or incomplete recovery phrase. One wrong word, a misspelling, or words in the wrong order will generate a different wallet entirely.
- The wrong blockchain network is selected. Your tokens may be on Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, Polygon, or another network. Trust Wallet defaults to showing only the network you have active.
- Token visibility is not enabled. Trust Wallet only shows tokens you have manually added or that are in its default list. If your token is not in that list, it appears as a zero balance until you add it.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
1. Verify the Recovery Phrase
- Check every word. Compare each word of your recovery phrase against the official BIP39 word list. Many words sound similar (e.g., "board" vs "broad") or have common misspellings.
- Confirm the order. The words must be in the exact sequence you wrote them. A single swapped word creates a different wallet.
- Re-enter the phrase. Delete the wallet and restore it again from scratch. Type each word carefully. Do not rely on autocomplete suggestions unless you are certain.
If the wallet restores but shows zero, and you are confident the phrase is correct, proceed to the next step.
2. Switch the Active Blockchain Network
- Open Trust Wallet and look at the network name at the top of the main screen (e.g., "Ethereum", "Smart Chain").
- Tap it. A list of supported blockchains appears. Select the network where you originally held your tokens.
- If you do not know which network your tokens are on, check the transaction history from your old phone or a blockchain explorer. The explorer will show the chain ID.
3. enable token visibility
Even on the correct network, tokens not in Trust Wallet’s default list will show zero until you add them manually.
- On the main wallet screen, tap the toggle icon (top right) or the "Manage" button.
- Search for your token by name. If it appears in the list, toggle it on.
- If it does not appear, you need to add it as a custom token.
To add a custom token:
- Tap "Add Custom Token" (often in the upper right menu).
- Select the correct network (e.g., Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain).
- Enter the token’s contract address. You can find this on a site like Etherscan or BscScan by searching for the token name and copying the official contract address.
- The symbol and decimals usually fill in automatically. If not, you can look them up on the same block explorer.
- Tap "Save". The balance should appear within a few seconds.
4. Force a Refresh
Sometimes the app simply needs to re-query the blockchain.
- Pull down on the main wallet screen to refresh.
- Or go to Settings > Preferences > Clear DApp Cache (if available) and restart the app.
- Wait 10 - 15 seconds after refreshing. If the balance still shows zero, close the app completely and reopen it.
5. Check for Network Congestion or Outdated App
Rarely, a node issue or an outdated app version can prevent balances from loading.
- Update Trust Wallet from your app store to the latest version.
- Ensure your phone has a stable internet connection.
- Try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
If the balance still shows zero
If you have tried all the steps above and the balance remains zero, the most likely explanation is that the recovery phrase is incorrect or belongs to a different wallet. There is no way to recover funds without the correct phrase.
You may also have restored a wallet that was never funded - double-check whether you ever sent tokens to the address shown in Trust Wallet. The app displays the wallet address at the top of the screen. Compare it to the address you used previously. If they do not match, the phrase is wrong.
Preventing This Problem in the Future
- Store your recovery phrase offline in two separate secure locations. Do not keep it in digital files, screenshots, or cloud storage.
- Test a small deposit after restoring a wallet on a new device before moving large amounts. Send a tiny amount and confirm it appears correctly.
- Keep a record of which blockchain networks and tokens you use. This makes restoration much faster.
If you have tried everything and still see zero, your funds remain on the blockchain as long as you have the correct private keys. You can check your address on a block explorer to confirm. The wallet display issue is almost always solvable by the steps above.
